Next, we reached the first major city on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast: Varna - the European Youth Capital 2017. Why it was chosen for this title, we don't know. Maybe it depends on the tourist season, which was already over by the end of September here? Unfortunately, we didn't notice anything remarkable in this regard. Still, Varna is a city worth seeing. Our main goal was to visit the city and regional archaeological museum, which we had to spend one evening and one morning exploring to see everything. In addition, we visited the ruins of one of the largest Roman thermal baths in Europe, the touristy beach, and astonishingly observed the results of the 2017 German federal election during an evening tour of the city center... Even though it probably wouldn't have changed anything, we would like to express our regret that we couldn't vote against this result, even though we made every effort to vote by mail. Something must have gone wrong in the mail between Germany and Hungary, because on exactly September 24th, we received a message from our vacation rental provider in Budapest that the letters had finally arrived there - four weeks after we submitted our request. Unfortunately, too late. I have no idea if this statement is useful or interesting to anyone, but we also find the election result incomprehensible! At least it shows us that we won't get anywhere with satire and the morally argumentative pointing finger against irrational fears. Let's hope that the AfD, as a completely amorphous and backward bunch, which will constantly restructure itself and cannot bring any blessings to its voters, experiences isolation in a strong opposition and that the future government works constructively on the constantly discussed problems of these populists.
Questionable whether such thoughts belong in a travel blog, but the event noticeably influenced our stay on site and somehow deserves its justification.
