Fantastic fires and peaceful fauna of Finland

Wotae: 22.09.2019

The border crossing into Finland, we could hardly pronounce or understand the road signs. For example, the sign that warns of speed cameras: Automaattinen liikennevalvonta.

The nature has been changing since leaving the North Cape, gradually turning into a flat, lonely landscape with lakes and autumn-colored trees. In Inari or Ivalo, we originally wanted to go for a coffee, but most of the cafes were a mix of gas station bistros, karaoke bars, or restaurants that served food on paper plates. So, we decided to go out for fries instead...

We found a dreamy spot right by the water. There was even a hiking hut and a covered fireplace. Luckily, we didn't need either of them. We enjoyed the open fire right by the water and watched the sun disappear behind the trees and sink into the water. To warm up a bit (with about 3°C outside), we played beach ball the next morning. Then, we continued towards Rovaniemi. Here, 6 kilometers away, is the Santa Claus Village - a tourist hotspot with cafes, restaurants, shops selling colorful trinkets, and winter activities like husky tours. The highlight was discovering and taking photos at the Arctic Circle marked on the ground. After a hot chocolate, a brownie, another pastry, and a bun, we headed to our sleeping spot. And lo and behold, on the way there, the first free-roaming moose crossed the gravel road. It's impressive how big these animals are and how leisurely they walk across the road, as long as the car is far enough away. As soon as we got closer, the moose disappeared - "Houdini!"

Once again, we found an optimal spot with a view of the open water. After gathering enough wood, Karsi made another fire. Lotti prepared two sticks to cook bread on the fire (for the first time in her life). Delicious!

After a fresh morning, we headed towards Sweden! As soon as the ignition was on, we continued listening to the remaining four hours of the phenomenal audiobook "The Lost Symbol" by Dan Brown.
