Beach love on Koh Samet - and Kian is now drooling

Wotae: 04.03.2024

We have now arrived on our last island. Koh Samet is exactly halfway between Koh Kood and Bangkok. And so that we don't have to travel so long before the 6-hour flight to Tokyo, we spend 3 days here.

Koh Samet is a very touristy island, located just a few kilometers from the coastal town of Rayong. Nevertheless, there are some more remote places away from the main beach and, above all, fantastic beaches, like something out of a picture book.

At least that's the description. And this much in advance: we were not disappointed.

The crossing was adventurous, Thai. We almost missed the catamaran from Koh Kood... it rained so heavily in the morning that we left 25 minutes late (at least we think the driver just didn't leave because of the rain). We finally arrived at the harbor at 8:59 a.m. — the boat leaves at 9. We were the last to board.

Our driver was waiting for us in the port of Laem Sok (mainland) and took us safely to Rayong. And from there we had to take another boat to Koh Samet.

This is where the chaos started. We had already forgotten this because we often already know our way around and avoid the tourist spots, but here we walked right into the middle of it. Like market barkers, the providers try to sell their boat trips. Since we didn't feel like arguing about €3-5, we just went with a lady who sold us a speedboat. We actually didn't want to go on a speedboat with Kian, but good - the ride only takes 10 minutes, that should work.

For a few euros more we were sold a boat with fewer passengers (max 10) and we were supposed to set off immediately.

That was it - we skipped the line and got on board. There were 4 other people in the boat with us — perfect. Then it started. The driver made a loop, not out to sea, but to the nearest pier. To invite more people. In the end we sat in this boat with 16 people + suitcases. I was subtly angry. But here too one unfortunately has to say… Welcome to Thailand…

Enough complaining: we really like Koh Samet. The beaches are really picturesque and there is a tourist center with everything you need. Of course it's full here in the center, but sometimes we really like that. After all, we are tourists too.

The only thing that was really annoying was all the speed breakers on the roads - on the way from the beach back to the hotel we felt really sick from the constant braking and starting.

But you can eat really well here and it's a lot cheaper than on Koh Kood.

This is a good place to spend your last days in Thailand.

Oh by the way: Kian started drooling. He happily babbles new sounds to himself every day. His current favorites are: Haaai, ahh, bleöö, pff, hmmm and mam—or something like that 😂
