The old man and the sea

Wotae: 01.07.2018

I start early in Bud, because Trondheim is on the program today as a destination and that is 270 kilometers away. For Central European ears, this sounds like a maximum of three hours of relaxed driving, but on a coastal road and with Norwegian speeds, it takes a driving time of five to six hours... Not including stops.

So let's go and directly on the Atlanterhavsvegen to Kristiansund. This Atlantic road was specially built for us travelers and runs over eight extraordinary bridges and several islands along the coast. Not the previous scenic highlight but not as boring as it might sound. I come into contact with the skerries for the first time, a kind of small rounded island.

Just before Kristiansund I can drive through a tunnel with a gradient of twelve percent. Basically, a tunnel under the Atlantic. Five kilometers long and 130 meters deep. The Norwegians can't do anything normal either.

From Kristiansund you can continue driving along the coast towards Trondheim, but I want to arrive this year, so it may be a piece of motorway. The speeds are not higher, but it is much more relaxed to drive. After a short stop at Trondheim Cathedral, I am drawn to the city center. It is Saturday afternoon, something must be going on in Norway's third largest city. Despite the two hundred thousand inhabitants, Trondheim is totally relaxed when it comes to traffic. There are hardly any cars in the city and traffic jams seem to know them only by hearsay. In addition, there are plenty of parking spaces on every corner. The average Trondheim resident must either be a student or not be there. The whole city is full of twenty-year-olds on longboards. In addition, almost every house contains a pub or cafe. Actually a great place to crash completely, if it weren't for the strict alcohol limit. So I'll stick to one beer and stroll along the canal. Similar to Bryggen in Bergen, here are old colorful crooked wooden houses right by the water. There are small shops, studios and cafes in every house. Very very cool. Trondheim will definitely see me again.
