Sunflowers in Sonneberg

Wotae: 25.07.2020

The night was very quiet despite the city parking lot, and I slept quite well, maybe a bit too long. At 9:30 the parking lot is filled with cars. I cycle back to the Main river to my well-known bathing spot. In the morning, everything here is so quiet and idyllic, some cyclists passing by and occasionally a few boats. Perfect for a few minutes of morning yoga meditation.

Afterwards, I sit down with my laptop at Café Wunschlos Glücklich to start my travel blog. It's always a bit of a challenge to work in a café, as there are quite a few factors that can make it fail. But it works well - despite not having electricity or WiFi, the atmosphere is perfect and the breakfast is amazing. Thanks to the Couchsurfers from Würzburg who marked this café as their favorite place. :) I take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful old town of Würzburg before cycling back to my bus to start my journey.

Today I'm driving to Sonneberg, 120 km away in the Thuringian Forest, where Daniel and Melanie have invited me. This time I'm only taking country roads, passing wheat fields and small towns - a beautiful route that I really enjoy. Just before Sonneberg, one sunflower field follows the next, maybe the city gets its name from them? The sun, which is already a bit lower, bathes the fields in warm light, so I stop briefly to take a picture at the next opportunity.

Others have also realized that the fields are a great photo opportunity, I meet a man and a woman who are doing a photo shoot. When I start talking to them, my dialect immediately catches their attention and I also find it interesting to hear the Thuringian dialect. In the end, I even get a photo with a borrowed sun hat ;)

In the evening, I arrive at my Couchsurfing hosts, where Daniel welcomes me in a totally chic, retro-style apartment. Even though it's only my second day on the road, I appreciate the shower as if I haven't showered for a week. Melanie returns from work at the school later on. We talk about minimalist living, our travel experiences, and I even get Asian noodles for dinner.
