Our next stop Akumal is located two hours south from Cancún along the "Riviera Maya" and is well-known for snorkeling with sea turtles. I did a short dive on our first day and discovered a loggerhead sea turtle right away. Alive this time, and just 25 meters from the shore!
Our apartment (booked via Airbnb) is part of a condominium that is located on a huge section of land owned by Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts. Thereby, we are allowed to use the facilites (sports, pool, etc.) of one of the all-inclusive resorts in this area. As it’s not high season, there are not a lot of people around so Jonathan has the pool all to himself most of the time.
Instead of our first planned day trip (Cenotes, Maya ruins, etc.), Lena fell on the stairs while carrying Jonathan. He was fine but Lena hurt her knee so we decided to go slowly for a couple of days and me doing my open water dive refresher.
We also had our first rainfall and Jonathan was a real gentleman, holding mum’s umbrella (see picture).
In Akumal, Jonathan had a lot of fun with his new friend Jona from Munich. His parents, Isa and Cris, had been in exchange with us in Munich already. They are also spending one month on parental leave in Yucatán and we finally met here, which we celebrated with a very good drop called Mezcalito (22 Pesos = 1 Euro a bottle at 7-Eleven).
So we’re not the only ones travelling around Yucatán with a baby. And what’s more, we are by far not the only ones to travel around the continent for a longer time and make others being a part of it. We saw plenty of beautiful campervans along the road and most of them, if on a longer trip, have their route displayed on the outside of the van, including facebook and/or instagram page to follow. Among them:
- Janima family: eight (!) years on four wheels from LA, California to Brasil. http://janimafamily.com/
- Las Córdobas: 60,000 (!!) km through 15 countries from Argentina to Alaska and back, in order to visit all places called Córdoba.

Our highlight in Akumal obviously was laguna snorkeling in Yal-Ku with Isa, Cris and Jona, as well as Imke, Marco and Lilo – another family from Munich. On the picture you see Jona in Pole Position, together with Liko in the first row, followed by Jonathan. Highly recommended: Buena Vida Restaurant. We spent the entire afternoon there, beneath palm trees and with a beautiful view at Half Moon Bay.
Next is Tulum and Bacalar!
