#32 The south island

Wotae: 27.05.2024

Resume of the south island:Sparsely populated, gorgeous landscapes, fantastic views and amazing wildlife!
The hiking tracks are well maintained and most tourist attractions, even short walks through the forest to a viewing point or a waterfall are barrier free. You can find free toilet facilities in city centres, on parking areas and even in the middle of the forest along remote hiking trails. Most cities are very clean and even the beaches are spared from accumulating plastics swimming in the ocean and being washed ashore. Along all hiking trails you can find traps trying to lure and kill rats, stouts, ferrets, possums etc. to protect native birds and plants.
The few people living here (only 1 out of 5 million people) are very, very friendly and like to stop for a little chat. They do not seem to bother about fancy clothes or healthy teeth and most of them drive huge trucks which are needed off the highways and outside cities. NZ is made for cars and even in big cities, where some public transportation exists, it is no fun at all as a pedestrian!
