The Journey to the Center of the Earth!
I really enjoyed the capital of Ecuador - Quito. We went on a great city tour and learned so much about the city and the country.
From Quito, we took a trip to 'Mitad del Mundo' - Middle of the Earth. In 1736, the French conducted their measurements here and concluded that the latitude at the location where Ecuador's official Equator monument stands today is 00° 00' 00". However, according to current calculations, they were off by 250 meters.
After the capital, we spent 4 days in a lodge in the Amazon rainforest. Far away from civilization, we explored the wildlife and plant life of the Amazon rainforest, took hikes through the rainforest, and witnessed the sunrise and sunset. We visited indigenous people of the rainforest, baked traditional Yuka bread with them, learned a lot about their lives, and met a shaman. It was truly a highlight.
In Baños, we went to a treehouse located at an altitude of 2600 meters and visited the Devil's Gorge.
