To distract ourselves from the truly ubiquitous trash and blocked beaches, we drive to a great gorge, the Cavagrande del Cassibile.
Almost like a miniature Grand Canyon. Beautiful!
We park at the higher parking lot
and go to the entrance, but it is locked with a padlock.
In 2014 there was a rockfall and the administration declared the path impassable. A padlock was attached.
Since the parking and restaurant operators do not earn any money without visitors, they help tourists climb over the gate and explain where they have to go. The path is very demanding and not feasible for Doro, besides the dog has to stay outside. She wouldn't have made the way with her short legs anyway.
So, I go alone.
The view is spectacular
It goes steeply down into the gorge
A fallen sign is leaning against the bushes
A first small lake appears
and I dive in
The water is crystal clear and quite cold, then there are several basins where the river water accumulates.
I let myself be photographed
And I continue to descend
Finally, small waterfalls flow into a last basin
After the strenuous ascent
I deserve a beer.
Then we drive the bus to the back of the parking lot, a small grove, where we stay overnight.
Next door the donkeys are watching
and we cook something delicious
A great sunset rewards us
