Our last stop in Mexico was the famous "Laguna de los siete colores" in Bacalar. It is a set of interconnected lakes that shine in seven different shades of blue and turquoise due to the varying depths and underwater surfaces.
We explored the lagoon by bicycles and went on a sunrise kayak tour. After a short night, we dragged ourselves out of bed at five o'clock and realized that the weather was not in our favor for the first time: dark storm clouds covered the entire sky and heavy rain showers followed soon. So instead of the radiant turquoise color in the rising sun, we had different shades of gray.
However, we did get to see a magnificent rainbow and an iridescent cloud during a short break in the rain. But a loud noise coming from the mainland announced the next curtain of rain.
Overall, we had three beautiful and relaxing days in and around Bacalar.
No wonder the peninsula is one of the most popular tourist destinations. The diversity of attractions, cenotes, and beaches fascinated us as well. Furthermore, the Mexicans were very friendly and open towards us.
After the expensive week in Cuba, Mexico was a great relief for our budget. We definitely got a lot for our money here.
Couchsurfing and various carpooling options were the key to our affordable travel style. Couchsurfing allowed us to stay with four hosts for a total of nine nights and get in touch with the locals. We are very satisfied with the affordable mixture of nights in hostels and with hosts. However, we still have to get used to being the youngest ones in every hostel.
Time flies and we are heading further south. We leave behind three wonderful weeks in Mexico and 58 tacos. We definitely leave Mexico with the desire to explore the rest of the country someday.
Two dates have now emerged for our onward journey, which we are looking forward to:
We must arrive in Utila, a Caribbean island in Honduras, by mid-November. We will stay with a family through WorkAway for two weeks.
On December 22nd, we have the honor of welcoming Niklas and Fredi at the airport in Managua, Nicaragua. The plan is to travel together as a group of four for about 20 days in southern Nicaragua and Costa Rica. But until then, there is still some time...
Next stop: Belize!
Saludos!
