'Down Under? Where is that?' At the other end of the world! I'm sitting at the Hong Kong airport, excited and full of energy. Australia is just a 'stone's throw' away! 4 seats just for me!? Time to turn on the music, stretch my legs, close my eyes, and good morning Sydney!

I'll be there in 9 hours... Finally arrived, the Australian sun is almost burning the rest of my sparse hair. Completely clueless, armed only with a small map, I navigate my way to my hostel, completely exhausted. Kings Cross is known for its parties, so I guess I'm in the right place at Kings Cross Backpackers.

After what feels like 20 hours of waiting for my room, I head to the rooftop terrace. Who do I meet first? Germans! What a surprise... We're everywhere, but so are the British! Beer pong to warm up and off to the Sydney nightlife. $20 entrance fee and an hour later, I'm standing alone in front of the club. The bouncer thought I had taken drugs and had too much to drink... well, the second part is true, but no chance, I have to stay outside. So, off home to bed!

There is this famous architectural masterpiece that looks like a huge collection of shells!? The Sydney Opera House. There is probably no more famous opera house in the world. Interesting, but you imagine it to be much more imposing and larger...

In contrast, the Sydney Harbour Bridge is much more impressive, the largest arched bridge in the world. Maybe my studies have paid off after all!?
The most spectacular fireworks in the world will be held here on New Year's Eve. They say you should be there by 10 o'clock in the morning at the latest to even get a good view. But who cares, I'm already on the Gold Coast with Kenny! Have fun to all those who want to squeeze in here...

Sydney is modern, clean, and despite the many people, you can't find any hustle and bustle or stress. People sit by the water, stroll through the streets, and everyone has a smile on their face. Some street musicians sit in the blazing sun all day, plucking their guitars, and thank everyone who throws a few dollars their way...

But I don't see much of Sydney either, we just have too much fun together on our rooftop terrace. The goon is flowing in masses. Even though the package says '...may contain traces of eggs, milk, and fish.', goon is incredibly cheap ($10 for 4 liters) and not as bad as you might think...

After 5 exciting days, full of new impressions, new acquaintances, I set off towards the north. In German, heading north sounds like you're crossing half the country from Stuttgart to Hamburg. In Australia, it means you're just 1.5 hours (by plane!) away from Sydney and still considered to be in the south. The Aussies call it the tyranny of distance. Whatever it is, goodbye Sydney and welcome to the Gold Coast!
