Most of the hiking trails on the west coast and some further to the northern tip of New Zealand have been closed since the beginning of last year (2023). A cyclone destroyed many paths and especially bridges and stairs. Who knows when they will all be repaired. I would have loved to walk the Te Henga Walkway along the cliffs on the west coast and about 45 minutes west of Auckland. As of now (May 2024) this is not possible.
The beach and the slightly smaller bay further north (O'Neill Bay) are incredibly beautiful and if the path is ever open again, I would recommend it to everyone, even if I haven't done this myself yet!
It's quite a detour to get from Te Henga to Piha. Auckland's surf paradise and really beautiful! A small alternative to the much longer Te Henga Walkway is the Mercer Bay Loop south of Piha. Currently (May 2024) - as far as I know - the only path along the cliffs that is accessible.
