Guatemala - Antigua

Udgivet: 17.10.2016

Once again a long journey.... We went from San Christobal to Antigua and were interrupted by an annoying border control. Border towns are always so shabby and you're glad when you somehow get away from there.

Then we passed through beautiful landscapes and lively little towns, where all the colorful Guatemalan life takes place on the street. Wooden huts, fruit stands, colorful colors, free-range chickens, house pigs, and many many children. But what primarily characterizes the landscape is CORN! The lifeblood of the Mayans. Corn fields as far as the eye can see. Practically a life in corn.

Fortunately, the roads weren't quite as terrible this time as they were on the previous trip, but even here a sports bra wouldn't have been wrong for all the female travelers among us. A definite "must" on future packing lists! ;-)

Our first stop in Guatemala is Antigua, the old colonial capital of a large part of Central America. Destroyed by an earthquake in 1773. And to this day, you can see the effects of this earthquake in countless ruins of collapsed Baroque churches and monasteries. Truly defining the cityscape, but also the reason for Antigua's special charm. Otherwise, the place is very beautiful, at the foot of a volcano.

We thoroughly explored the city and had beautiful days there. There won't be so much that will stick in memory, except for the good food and excellent coffee.
