We picked up the Land Cruiser this morning and received an instruction on 4-WD driving and how to set up the roof tent.
Then we started, driving on the left side, bought supplies: pasta with tomato sauce, toast, eggs, bacon, wine, cookies, about 10 packages of peanuts, and 30 liters of water in canisters. We stored our suitcases and reduced all clothes to one travel bag, nothing else would have fit in the car anyway.
Then we left Darwin on the Stuart Highway, passing huge termite mounds, barren forests, red tracks, we even saw water buffalos 🐃. By the way, here "up" everyone drives a 4-WD, it's really necessary as right off the highway, you are already in the outback.
Then we (Günter) drove 200 km south and made sure to find a camping site before it gets dark (around 6:30 pm).
Now it's 8:30 pm pitch black and we're sitting next to our Land Cruiser on camping chairs, sipping full-bodied Australian red wine and enjoying the concert of crickets.
We mastered today's challenge: setting up our roof tent on the Toyota: Mo and Günter sleep on the top level and mother sleeps in the tent below on a camp bed. I will tell you tomorrow how it was!
We have to get up early tomorrow morning, because we want to cover another 600 km!
