Road closures, road closed, etc...

Udgivet: 24.05.2023

Enjoy a cozy breakfast and then leisurely pack your bags. That's how our day started today. The plan was to drive further down Highway No 1 to Bixby Creek Bridge and then to Pfeiffer Beach. We knew that part of the route between Big Sur and Lucia was closed due to some heavy landslides in January. Despite the grayness and fog, driving along the Pacific Ocean was simply wow 🥰 We reached the bridge, but at the exit to Pfeiffer Beach, there was a tiny, about 1x2m, sign: road closed. Well, a car was coming towards us and one can overlook such a small thing on the order of a lady 😇 Half a mile before reaching the destination, a road closure. Impossible to get through. Fine, parked the car slightly aside, strapped on the backpack and started walking. We didn't get very far before one of the landslide cleanup crew approached us and kindly explained that the road was closed. Yes, we know. That's why we're on foot 😇 He realized that, but unfortunately it also applied to pedestrians 🤷🏼‍♀️ But in about 1-2 months, everything will probably be open here again, and then we are welcome to come back. It's just not allowed right now. It even comes with a night in jail 😨 Well, we don't want that 😅 Thanks for the info, sorry again and off we went 😅
The next item on my list would have been the Historic Lime Kilns. Just before Lucia. According to Google, it should be accessible, as the closure was supposed to be behind Lucia. We drove along Highway 101 South in a big curve, fully trusting maps, and suddenly we were at the entrance of Fort Hunter Liggett. A huge US Army base. One of the largest training grounds for field maneuvers and live firing exercises. Um, yeah 😅 Got some brief info, yes, you can drive through there. Okay, let's do it. Past an obstacle course, huge shooting ranges, an airfield, and other facilities, we were guided to a bridge. The only way to get to the Historic Lime Kilns from here, and what's this? Only military vehicles are allowed to continue driving 🙄 Frau didn't insist on continuing driving 😅 So we went back to the highway and continued to the hotel. In San Simeon, we stayed at the Pacific Coast Roadhouse - SureStay Collection by Best Western. A really nice room with a balcony. Some rooms have a view of the Pacific, but unfortunately not ours. Okay, maybe if Jörg carries me on his shoulders 😆
We threw our bags in the room and trusted maps once again. It said that the drive here on Highway No 1 was possible all the way to the campground at the Historic Lime Kilns. Tzz, that didn't work out. Not even halfway through the route: road closed. Turned around again, heading back to the hotel. Along the way, we stopped at the viewing area of the San Simeon elephant seals and walked along the trail. It was pretty funny. At least I thought so 😅 Jörg thought they were all boring stinkers that are only good as shark food 🤣 In the meantime, we're back at the hotel and I'm celebrating the Wi-Fi here. It uploads pictures at the speed of light. The blog has never been updated this quickly before 🤣
