I went to the small Gathering Place Brewery with Jack. After interesting conversations with the bartender (his family is from Waldsassen), he showed me the nice 8hl brewery with only 4 double brewhouses. Mainly they fill kegs, a few bottles and growlers & crowlers (growlers only with cans, filled directly from the tap and closed - 3 weeks shelf life!?).
Gathering Place Brewing Company
Prenzlauer (Berliner Weisse) 3.4%
Too little acidity (very hard to perceive), too little body; dumping beer
Treffpunkt (Kölsch) 4.6%
Tastes more bitter than 24BE, yeast taste of ale yeast, not Kölsch yeast, but good ale
Kohi Hui (dry hopped New Zealand Pils // Motueka & Wakatu) 4.7%
Too much bitterness and too much hopping, which leads to the beautiful lager pilsner aroma being lost. Could also be a pale ale.
Priere (Belgian Style Single) 5.5%
Floral and peppery taste of the yeast (Omega Yeast Labs-Belgian W). Very interesting!
Merci (Brut IPA aged in Sauvignon Blanc Barrels) 5.6%
Great balance between the wine aroma, the French hop aromas (Barbe Rouge & Mistral), and the dry finish. Would also be great with more malt body.
Une Petite Prière (Priere in wine barrel and wild sacchro yeast) 5.8%
High drinkability, reminiscent of a saison, 9 months in a wine barrel give it the perfect taste. Peppery-floral taste is almost lost.
2017 Barrel-Aged Wonderworker (biere de garde aged 1 year in Chardonnay Barrels) 8.6%
Lots of dark malt taste, some wine taste, great digestif
