28.-31.05. - Havana, Cuba

Publikováno: 02.06.2023

On May 28th, we took a shared taxi back to the capital. Normally, we would have liked to see more of the island in our 12 days, but that was not possible. We had practically no plans beforehand (no taxi or bus connections, no Airbnbs, and no tours or excursions). This type of travel is difficult in Cuba because buses cannot be booked a day in advance. Some (important) apps don't work easily in Cuba (including Airbnb, PayPal, Booking.com, and many flight searches), which makes the whole situation more complicated. Cuba itself is a very beautiful country, and we are incredibly grateful to have seen it all (even though it is really exhausting to walk for half an hour through the city to get drinking water and visit numerous stores). We were also sold bottled water as 'drinking water' which tasted like chlorine and was most likely tap water (even though the bottle cap was still completely sealed...). At least it wasn't saltwater. Maybe you could also drink tap water in Cuba - who knows.

On May 29th and 30th, we explored some more corners of Havana. In addition to sights we hadn't seen before, we also took a rum tour at the Museo del Ron Havana Club. During the rum tour, we had a German-speaking guide who spoke decent German. You could book different tours: just a tour without a tasting, alternatively with one tasting, or with three tastings. Of course, we opted for the tour with three tastings. But first, we learned about the rum production process. Afterwards, we tried three different rums: Havana Club 3 Años (for Cuba Libre and stuff like that), Havana Club 7 Años (can also be used for mixed drinks, but also tastes good on its own), and 'Selección de Maestros', which was really good. There are a number of other Havana Club varieties, but they are all too expensive to be tasted on a tour for a total of €3.60.

On May 31st, we flew to Medellín in Colombia. Of course, there was almost nothing indicated at the airport in Havana, and we had to ask our way to the individual counters (check-in and security checks). Since we had no breakfast on that day and there was practically nothing to eat at the airport 'Cuban-style', our food consisted of 3 cucumbers. More about that later.
