Last day in Galapagos

Publicatu: 03.08.2017

Today's breakfast: fresh coconut. For a good start to the day!

In the morning, we rode to the Charles Darwin Station and learned a lot about tortoises, as well as other animal species and vegetation on Galapagos. We saw animals of various ages, including a curious visit to the stuffed Lonesome George. Before entering and leaving the room, we had to wait two minutes in an airlock, as the temperature inside should be no more than 19 degrees for conservation reasons.

Later, we visited another lagoon near our hostel.

The highlight of the day was the guided tour in the afternoon: a boat took us from the harbor to the edge of the island, where we plunged into the water equipped with wetsuits and snorkeling equipment. It was incredible: besides countless fish of every color and size, we also encountered at least seven sea turtles. The animals were not at all bothered by us and swam past us looking for food, sometimes less than half a meter away.

The next stop was Las Grietas, a kind of natural pool hidden between two steep cliffs, where we could observe more fish in the crystal-clear water. The boat then took us to other beaches and cliffs where we discovered more animals, including a whitetip reef shark and a red-footed booby.

On one hand, we are sad that we will be leaving this magical island tomorrow, but on the other hand, we have experienced so many fascinating things in these few days here and now we are looking forward to more adventures on the mainland!

Stay tuned.
