The Basque Country

Publicatu: 07.05.2024

We spent two nights in the Basque Country in Zarautz near San Sebastian, one of the surfing strongholds of northern Spain.

It was a relatively large campsite, which was strangely impersonal when I think of other places in Spain, but it was OK. The neighbours here didn't say hello, it was unusually unfriendly, but the campsite there is probably a transit site because of its proximity to the motorway.

BUT that shouldn't hide the fact that it was another very interesting stop. It's like South Tyrol again, there are the plants that we know from the south, and the calla lily in every wet place. I found wild garlic again and thought it was funny because it smells intense, but of course it has already faded, perhaps the faded flowers are the reason it doesn't taste as good, but it was great to find this plant in Spain at all.

Of course we also went hiking, there are so many mountain hikes here that you almost feel at home. BUT because of Nerone we decided to walk less uphill, because he was limping and probably sprained his leg. That doesn't bother me at all, because I caught a bit of a cold in Galicia, so I shouldn't overdo it either.

The hikes showed that it had rained a lot in the Basque Country, because the paths were all wet, and in some places very muddy and slippery. But that didn't spoil our fun, we even found a botanical trail where I was able to take some great photos. It's always amazing what great trees and plants grow in Europe and all over the world!

We were right next to a winery, but this time we only bought Basque wine from the Mercato. Unfortunately, the pet shop didn't have any BARF products, so we went shopping.

All in all, the Basque Country, with its strange language that has nothing to do with Latin, is definitely worth a visit, as are Galicia and Asturias. It is now becoming more and more lively, the camping season has definitely begun!

We will then retreat to France!
