Jamaica

Publicatu: 10.08.2022

Actually, we wanted to fly to Mexico and then travel around Central America. However, the flights were very expensive and when we found a cheap flight to Jamaica, we spontaneously decided to fly there. In retrospect, we can say that we definitely did not regret it. Karo had been there on a family vacation a few years ago and therefore knew her way around, which was a big advantage. The first few days were not so great, the tropical heat was tough and we ended up with a bad first accommodation on Air BnB. To make matters worse, Karo got sick and we couldn't do much for three days. But when the cold was over, things got better. Now we also had great hosts who organized trips for us and introduced us to the culture. Especially noteworthy are the beautiful beaches that Jamaica has, as well as the clear Caribbean Sea. We found the state of Portland in the northeast of the country the most beautiful. Day by day, we fell more in love with Jamaica and were a little sad when we had to go home again. Here are our highlights briefly:

-> Doctors Cave Beach:

Beautiful and very clean beach in Montego Bay.

-> 7 Mile Beach:

11 km long sandy beach in Negril.

-> Dunns's River Falls:

Famous waterfall that flows into the sea in Ocho Rios.

-> Frenchmans Cove Beach:

Beautiful beach in Portland where many scenes for famous movies such as the first James Bond film were filmed.

-> Winnifred Beach:

Nice public beach in Portland where you can also eat well.

-> Blue Lagoon:

A lagoon in Portland where the water shimmers blue. We actually wanted to swim here, but a few days ago crocodiles were sighted there, so we didn't dare. But it was still very beautiful even without going into the water.

-> Blue Mountains:

We took a day trip here with our host, including a visit to a coffee plantation. This was definitely one of the most beautiful highlights of the trip, and of course we also stocked up on a supply of the famous Blue Mountain coffee.

-> Rafting on the Martha Brae River:

45-minute raft ride with a captain who shares a lot of knowledge about the vegetation and wildlife around the river.

-> Luminous Lagoon or Glistening Waters:

This was another highlight on our last day in Jamaica. In Falmouth, there is a lagoon where microorganisms live that make the water glow blue when it moves. It was a mind-blowing experience. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to take good photos with a mobile phone. There is a photographer who occasionally takes photos, but they were so overpriced that we refused to buy them. Anyway, you have to experience it yourself, photos cannot capture this natural phenomenon as well, in my opinion. It was a bit creepy to jump into the water at night in the dark, even though the captain assured us that there are no crocodiles in this lagoon. But I enjoyed every second in the water and really exerted myself, because the more you move, the brighter the water glows. Absolutely recommended!

After long consideration, we decided not to continue traveling to Central America. It was a beautiful time in Jamaica, but it was also exhausting and took a lot of energy. The tropical heat and the sometimes lacking infrastructure make traveling with a wheelchair very difficult. For three weeks, that was perfectly fine, but much longer would probably just be too exhausting. We want to enjoy the time we have for traveling and make the most of it. What happens next will show, as we are known to be very spontaneous :)
