Already during my first trip to Crete with my mother in June 2016, I had decided to come here again with Luke to explore the island in more detail. As I usually stick to such resolutions, it should be a year later then ;)
Said and done
We decided on a two-week car rental trip in May. To be precise, it should be 16 days in the end. This should be our first completely self-organized trip and also the first time we should be on the road with a rental car. To prepare, we got a travel guide and informed ourselves about the island. What did we want to see? What did we want to do? So we planned a route that we intended to take.
We contemplated for a long time whether we should book our accommodations from Germany or wait until we arrived. But since we had read that May was still low season and there wasn't much going on on the island yet, we decided to look for our accommodations on site. We wouldn't regret it! With the help of the travel guide, we already selected possible accommodations within our budget that we could visit on site.
So we only booked the flights and the rental car and our first hotel in Heraklion. We wanted to spend the first night there anyway, so we might as well book it in advance. Our planned route should take us all around the island, with a little room for flexibility. I was a bit worried whether everything would work out. Will driving there go well? Will the route be too stressful? Will we always find accommodation? How much will we end up spending? Since we could only estimate the costs here, we were curious to see how much the trip would cost us in the end. The excitement was definitely high, I was sure we would see and experience a lot.
Go Crete
On May 4th, it was finally time. Our flight from Frankfurt to Heraklion already left at 5:30 AM, so we had to get up pretty early (actually in the middle of the night). But you gladly do that for a nice trip ;) My mom kindly drove us to the airport.
