After a detour to a nearby bakery (yummy 😋), we head to 2-28 Peace Park.
In 1948, tensions arose between the long-established Taiwanese people and the newly immigrated Mainland Chinese. A dispute between a cigarette vendor and an anti-smuggling officer sparked a public unrest that was violently suppressed by the Chinese military. Between 10,000 to 30,000 civilians lost their lives.
The park was established during the Qing Dynasty and is the oldest park in the city.
In 1996, it was renovated and renamed, with the hope of learning from this painful lesson for the future.
