Antelope Canyon & Horseshoe Bend

Gipatik: 20.09.2023

We left beautiful Utah, drove to the state of Arizona and there to the small town of Page. This was founded in the 1960s when construction of the Glen Canyon Dam began. We were able to admire the huge dam from the visitor center, we saw the Colorado River and Lake Powell dammed behind it. It is the second largest in the USA after the Hoover Dam with its Lake Mead in Nevada. For today we had booked a guided tour through the Lower Antilope Canyon. It is located in the indigenous Navajo area and can therefore only be accessed with a permit and not alone. The canyon is not only very popular with tourists; the cover photo of National Geographic and a famous screensaver from Microsoft were also photographed here. Rain and erosion created gentle shapes in the sandstone and in the right light it looked really great! First we went down a staircase into the canyon and then we walked underground for an hour until we finally crawled out again via a staircase at the other end.

Afterwards we drove to nearby Horseshoe Bend. The Colorado River makes a loop here, which of course reminded us old Saarlanders of the beautiful Saar loop 😉.

Finally, we drove to a drive-in where you order via microphone at your parking lot and then have the fried food delivered to your car. And so you can gorge yourself without taking a step 😄.

We're now heading to the legendary Grand Canyon!
