Enough now with wanderlust - Scotland is calling!

Gipatik: 19.04.2017

We are once again fed up with everyday life, the concrete jungle, the noise of flying and the hustle and bustle of the city - it draws us out into the wilderness. Admittedly, it won't be completely wild. This time we are starting the adventure in Scotland with an introductory dose in civilized Edinburgh. At least that's what we assume. This time, we are taking my dad with us on the trip for support. I would say it's a classic win-win situation: Lars and I have our noses in travel guides and click through various travel blogs for weeks, while Manfred will broaden our horizons on site with anecdotes from the past.

The preparations went smoothly. So smoothly that it's almost boring. Only Ida had a little more trouble. The little redhead was so excited that she put on her tiny yellow backpack every ten minutes and wanted to go to the airport. Fairly, she hasn't internalized the concept of time yet.

We picked up my dad at the airport, got rid of the suitcases as quickly as possible, and watched the check-in process for a while before taking off with a 25-minute delay. At this point, we want to give our daughter a huge compliment.

Despite missing her nap, being very excited, and my nervousness, there was no whining, howling, or even a tantrum. She patiently listened to everything, waited for takeoff, looked out of the window during the flight, and made a little mischief as expected, until her button eyes closed two minutes before landing. Of course.

We took the tram at a snail's pace to the city center on Scottish soil. If you don't slow down here, I don't know. Luckily, we're on vacation. The pace here is not even comparable to our German hustle and bustle. Even the lady at the supermarket checkout had all the time in the world. We didn't, because Ida urgently needed to go to bed, but what can you do?!

Ten minutes on foot over buggy-unfriendly sidewalks and we were there. 37 Montgomery Street. Not very inviting, to be honest. Overall, the gray facades of the terraced houses are not very attractive. At least the front doors have pretty embellishments and the many chimneys on the roofs are simply funny. Our front door was opened by two neighbors who I would probably have avoided in the dark. The staircase is similarly off-putting. Dirty concrete steps, dark blue walls, too little light.

But, as so often, the first impression is deceptive. Because our new abode is a dream: tastefully furnished rooms with old planks, a fabulous view of Calton Hill from the living room, and a sweet welcome basket with toffee and chocolate in the spacious kitchen-living room. But Ida's highlight is probably the room doors. They have the handles installed at her height: door open, door closed, door open, door closed...

After a quick tour of the apartment by our landlord Martin, we packed our things into the wardrobes and sat down on the comfortable sofas in the living room. This is where our first evening in Edinburgh ends. With an acceptable beer and a tolerable pizza. It could be worse.

Tomorrow we have rented a car and want to explore the surroundings a bit.

The Rosslyn Chapel from the movie 'The Da Vinci Code'

Wallace Monument (in honor of William Wallace, also known as Braveheart)

Doun Castle and Midhope Castle because of Jamie and Claire 😍 (Outlander)

Insane, we are actually in Scotland!!!
