After the children had been playing on the holiday farm all morning, we drove to the center of Kelheim. There we took the 'Bimmelbahn', the Ludwigsbahn, to the Befreiungshalle, which was commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria. The Befreiungshalle was built in memory of the battles won against Napoleon during the liberation wars from 1813 to 1815. It is a truly impressive building with many statues and taller than the Pantheon in Rome. We climbed 165 steps to the top and enjoyed a beautiful view of the Danube and the city of Kelheim. Even the children were impressed... After taking the Ludwigsbahn back to Kelheim (and Juliane conveniently fell asleep), we explored the city and strolled around. It is a very romantic place. For dinner, we went to the Schnitzelwirt for delicious Bavarian food :-)
