Roadtrip Tag 68 / On the Moon & the perfect night

Gipatik: 23.11.2017

Since we had heard about Moon Plain, we wanted to go there. Unfortunately, there were no tours because the road was not passable due to the rain in the previous days. However, we heard from locals that you can also drive there yourself. We stayed at the tourist information center until we had all the necessary information and a permit. The permit is needed because you drive through Arnehm Land (Land of the Aboriginis). Some say the landscape looks like the moon, others say it's like Mars. This backdrop is regularly used for film shoots.

We turned on our all-wheel drive/4WD and started driving. Unfortunately, we took an exit too early and suddenly found ourselves in the Aboriginal community, luckily no one was home. We drove off-road for an hour and tried to follow tire tracks. We drove around in a river bed and over whatever came our way. Since we suspected that we might be wrong somehow, we wanted to go back to the city. On the way back, we suddenly came to the right intersection and were able to drive on a simple gravel road. The Dog Fence was also on the way. The Dog Fence is the longest fence in the world and stretches over 5000 km. This fence encloses South Australia and is intended to protect the sheep living there from dingoes.

At around 12 o'clock, we finally set off further north. On the way, we reached the border to the Northern Territory, we were happy and had a bit of a home feeling. We continued driving until 6 p.m. and then were only 160 km away from Ayers Rock. We were all alone at the rest area and could already see the destination, Ayers Rock, in the distance. The sky was bright blue and the night was clear with stars. It was the perfect starry sky including the Milky Way. It felt like being surrounded by a capsule of stars, you didn't want to fall asleep.
