After a day in Arusha, it really starts: our 6-day safari. We still can't quite believe that we are really in Africa!
We start in Tarangire National Park. As soon as we arrive, we can observe elephants bathing and playing - magical and a bit surreal for us to see so many animals walking around our car without fear. We see many baobab trees that leave me in awe with their wide trunks. Elephants cross the road again and again, and we enjoy the scenery with the open roof of the car. A dream. Unfortunately, due to the wooded areas, there are a lot of tsetse flies, which I - now I know - haaate!! That's why we dress in something long and loose-fitting to make it harder for them to bite. Also, they are attracted to the colors black and blue, so we avoid wearing those colors in general. When one of them eventually bites me, I freak out a little (because they can transmit sleeping sickness), but Flo and our driver and guide Brian were able to calm me down a bit. After sunset, we head to our first campsite where we receive a delicious meal from our accompanying cook. Then it's off to the tent: sleeping in the open in an unfenced camp - exciting! I was pretty tired and quickly fell asleep, but Flo told me the next day that he couldn't fall asleep until he put in earplugs because of all the sounds of hyenas and lions 😅
