09.10.2019 Banks Peninsula

Gipatik: 09.10.2019

Almost right next to Christchurch begins the area Banks Peninsula, a volcano-formed small mountain range. In the middle is the small town of Akaroa, from which penguin or dolphin tours are offered.

'Free' camping is a bit more difficult here, as the sites are either occupied very early or it is simply not allowed.

We were only one day in Banks Peninsula. The day started wonderfully, the weather was good and our first stop was 'Birdlings Flat', a pebble beach. After that, we enjoyed driving up and down the mountain landscape until we reached Akaroa.

In the small town, we took a break and found a free camping spot with perfect views in the mountains using the app 'Wikicamps'.

From there, we went for a hike and when we were about to 'retreat into the car' in the evening, a passing car informed us that camping is not allowed here.

Of course, we felt strange then and drove 10 km back to Akaroa because there is a truly official campground. Since it was already 6:30 pm and it slowly gets dark at 7:30 pm, unfortunately, there was not a single spot available here. So, we had to drive another 50 km to reach the next free campground. We then returned to 'Chamberlains Ford' because we knew everything there and somehow love the place.

Well, a crazy day, but such days are also part of it.
