Under construction

Objavljeno: 07.05.2019

Construction is underway here in Perth! New buildings, construction sites, highway expansions as far as the eye can see! The booming mining industry in Western Australia has allowed Perth to grow and prosper like no other city in Australia in recent years.

Our neighbors to the left are our lovely landlords Darren and Tracy, and there is a construction site to our right. It is highly doubtful that we will ever witness the completion of this magnificent villa. Construction has been going on next door for three years now, even on Saturdays starting at 7 am by the way, but somehow... slowly!

The construction workers, mostly alternative-looking young men with dreadlocks, tattoos, and cool music playing on the construction site, definitely do not have stress at work! There is a lot of laughter and the 'smokos', the short breaks in between, are not neglected. I am always amazed that in front of the construction sites of these impressive houses there is always just a small pickup truck with a ladder on top and a concrete mixer... a bizarre contrast to the otherwise oversized Perth with its wide streets, huge parks, and massive villas with fancy boats in front...

And it is astonishing how simple roofs can withstand the turbulent storms of Western Australia!

When I became aware of the fact that I live next to a construction site, I immediately thought of my brother, who bought a weekend house on the Gerlitzen out of desperation due to noise pollution from a neighboring construction site. In addition, the Bible verse came to mind, which says that everyone who builds their house on sand is a fool. Here, every house is built on sand because underneath the thin layer of grass, which is diligently watered and maintained in English style, there is nothing but sand! Today, it's still a huge sandpit, but in three or four years it will be a wonderful single-family house!

Perth is not only the most isolated capital city in the world, but also the sunniest. And that is how people live here: away from the hustle and bustle, away from stress, with a sunny disposition, just a little slower than at home. Even when it comes to building houses! Tomorrow, Rene will fly to Japan for a business trip, which is not exactly known for its chillax attitude. Culture shock! He will be happy to return to cozy WA after his business trip! Does WA stand for Western Australia or is it more like 'wait a while'?
