After four months of work, we had finished converting our camper van in mid-October, so it was immediately clear that we had to take a 'trial vacation'. After some consideration, we decided that our first trip should go to the Rhön.
The next weekend finally arrived: it was finally time to go!
On Friday evening, after work, we drove from home and bought some provisions before getting on the highway.
After a two-hour drive, we reached our sleeping spot around 8 PM, which we had previously found with the app 'Park for Night'. It was a hiking parking lot near the Milseburg. Afterwards, we prepared our dinner and spent the evening comfortably with a good book and the obligatory camper fairy lights.
The next morning, we woke up in our bed with the first rays of sunshine. We had survived our first night in the camper van, phew...
The day started with a nice breakfast. After doing the dishes and stowing everything securely, we drove to the Wasserkuppe. But since it was still quite early and the autumn fog had not yet lifted, we realized, once we arrived at the top, that we couldn't see anything at all. The visibility was about 30-50m. So we drove back to the hiking parking lot of the Milseburg, laced up our hiking boots, and started the ascent. The hike was accompanied by an eerie atmosphere due to the fog and the pristine forest.
After an hour, we arrived at the summit, sweaty but happy. Now the fog cleared up from time to time, allowing us to catch a glimpse of the landscape. We lingered for a while, then began the descent back to the camper van.
By now, the autumn fog had completely disappeared and a few sun rays were breaking through the clouds; we decided to try our luck again at the Wasserkuppe to get a sensational view: we were not disappointed!
After spending the rest of the day exploring the summit, it was now time to find a spot for the upcoming night. Once again, we consulted the app and found a great secluded spot.
For dinner, we had spaghetti with Bolognese sauce with lots of garlic. We enjoyed the meal while the diesel heater warmed our feet. Finally, we planned the next day and went to bed tired. The first real vacation day with the camper van came to an end.
After a peaceful night and a good breakfast, we drove to the Red and Black Moor. The two hiking trails through the moors were very informative and enlightening thanks to the many signs along the way. The landscape resembled something out of a fantasy world. We explored until noon, when it was time to return home.
Our journey ended on our yard, where we unpacked and cleaned everything.
The next trip will take place at Christmas time. We will head towards the Alps and later towards the sea to Rügen and Fehmarn.
Stay tuned and stay healthy.
