The 14-hour day trip took me eastward to Wave Rock, which is 350 kilometers away. The drive first went northeast through the hills around Perth to York. York is the oldest inland settlement in Australia and now has around 2,500 inhabitants. The landscape is characterized by endless cereal fields, interrupted by isolated bush areas and salty basins. It is currently harvest time. Previously, the grain was transported to the coast by train. A few years ago, the railway line to the port in Fremantle was closed. It is more efficient to transport the grain by truck. I made a short stop at a dog cemetery where farmers bury their working dogs. Shortly after noon, I reached Wave Rock. This is a granite block in this slightly undulating expanse, which has been shaped into a 15-meter-high surf wave by wind and water over millions of years.
