How to get to Montenegro?

It obviously depends on what kind of trip you are planning. Since the country is very small and easy to travel around, I recommend renting a car. There are two airports in Montenegro, both of which are served by flights. 'Podgorica' is the capital city located inland, and 'Tivat' is the city on the coast. The Podgorica Airport is usually the one used by tourists as it is cheaper (that's where we landed).

  • Option 1: Self-Drive:

If you want to drive with your car from Germany, make sure you have enough time for the trip and possible stops along the way. The journey itself would probably take around 24 hours. So, it's not exactly a hop, skip, and a jump! This should be well thought out and was only our backup plan in case Lufthansa continued to strike ;)

  • Option 2: Airplane & Rental Car

Flying is the more convenient option. However, it should be noted that currently there are no non-stop flights to Montenegro. We flew with Lufthansa from Frankfurt am Main, and then with Austrian Airlines via Vienna. Compared to Ryanair, it was definitely more comfortable :D The other option would be to fly via Belgrade, Serbia (I think it was a few euros cheaper).

How much did we pay for the flights?

We paid 187€ per person for the round trip with transfers and 2 suitcases (23kg) with Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines. The prices probably won't get any cheaper. I recommend booking about 3 months in advance, otherwise you can expect prices to increase. By the way, we booked our flights through Booking.com for the first time and interestingly, we were able to select seats in advance without any additional charge.

Which rental car and how much?

We also booked the rental car through Booking.com from the provider Sixt (only because I got 10% off through Booking). Otherwise, I recommend Check24 for rental cars! We paid a total of 490€ for 12 days, which is about 40€/day. We had a relatively new Skoda Fabia, which did not cause any problems. As for refueling, I can only say that gasoline is priced at 1.26€/l (as of Sep. 22) and we spent 60€ on fuel for our road trip throughout the country! I don't need to say more ;)

If we had known about the adventurous road conditions there, we probably would have paid a little extra and rented an SUV (to avoid being shaken so much, especially in the mountains and around the lake).
