Slowed down

A bɔra kɛnɛ kan: 31.01.2024

We're by the sea, yay! There is still little wind, but all information points to a severe storm tonight, tomorrow and tomorrow night! Hence the advice of all locals: Don't drive tomorrow!!!! Ok, of course we stick to that and looked for a place by the sea for the first time. The sea, especially the beach, looks a little different at this time of year than we know it.

This morning we visit the World Heritage Museum of Alta. On the way there, a previously unknown warning light lights up in our car. Research shows: lack of oil pressure. The address of a workshop is found and saved, but first we go to the museum. Hundreds of rock carvings from prehistoric times (the oldest 8,000 years old) were found outdoors here. These are now covered in snow and the nice woman at the ticket counter says they will be happy when they can open the outdoor area in May. We look at the exhibition inside and, as always, it is historically very interesting and wonderfully designed!

When we returned to the car it turned out that the orange light had said goodbye again - thank God! - was probably a troll😅

Then we go to the Northern Lights Cathedral - we don't have any great expectations... but... this is another special architectural gem!

The facade is covered with titanium plates

After the tour, Wilfried discussed the Norwegian social system with the man at the ticket counter and we learned a lot of interesting things about the political system and the attitude to life of the northern Norwegians, who feel freer than the rest of the Norwegian population.

Finally, the man advises us to spend one more day here in Alta and then decide whether to continue north or south.

The streets and sidewalks here are so slippery that even the Norwegians grit! For the first time we see grit here! Alta is primarily known for its stones. There is a particularly resistant type of slate here that used to be sold everywhere as “roof tiles”. Today it is a particularly exclusive opportunity to roof a house.

Before we drive to our campsite, we buy fresh fish fillets, which we fry and enjoy in the evening!

We are curious to see whether the predictions are correct. In any case, we secured our covers securely to the car!
