Positive and negative impressions

A bɔra kɛnɛ kan: 01.04.2018

The Ghanaians are very loving and kind people! Whenever they see a white person, they immediately call out "Obruni" (= White) and they want to touch your hand. However, they are not pushy, because when I withdraw my hand and say no thank you, they leave me alone. Most of the time, they want to tell me that I am beautiful, ask how I am doing, how I like Ghana, or simply wish me a nice stay! I even received marriage proposals 😅

The worst thing is the trash! Trash is everywhere and since Ghanaians do not have toilets, they use the trench next to the road, the walls of houses, or the sea as a toilet. It's pretty disgusting and smells awful! Now during the festival, there were no toilets either, so we had to pee in small side alleys, even officially marked as "bathroom", in a shower on the ground - it didn't even have a drain hole! Yuck!

The worst is the lagoon right in Accra: heaps of trash and feces, with slums in the middle. Children play on these mountains of garbage or check if they can find something edible there.

In addition, it is very hot and dusty here. As soon as I shower, I'm sticky again! Especially at night: in the hostel, we have fans but no air conditioning - I miss my luxury! 🙈

Currently, it is also difficult with the food.. There are no restaurants as we know them, only street food (which sometimes sits out in the heat all day). Therefore, I am very cautious and have not eaten much yet. Later, I will have to look for a supermarket so that I can cook something for myself 😊
