San Pedro de Atacama (2,408 m above sea level) is a small village located within the Atacama Desert, one of the driest and loneliest landscapes on Earth 🌎. This village is our destination because it offers countless activities. The road from Calama airport to San Pedro de Atacama is very well signposted (since there are not many roads). The road is always straight, sometimes a bit uphill. As soon as it's no longer straight, there is a sign for a curve, although in my opinion it's not really a curve...
On the entire journey between Calama and San Pedro (101 km), there is no sign of life as far as the eye can see. Occasionally, you will come across a car, tourist bus, or truck. About every 20 km, you have to overtake a vehicle yourself or be overtaken. Crosses had been placed at irregular intervals on the side of the road, probably due to a fatal accident. The straight roads, which lead to lack of concentration (due to technology, etc.) and the few vehicles, were probably the cause of the many crosses.
For us, the vastness, the absolute silence, and the view of mountains ⛰️ and volcanoes 🌋 were unique and very impressive.
We enjoyed being on the road with Dagi 🚘, so we could stop and enjoy the views according to our taste.
- Do you hear it?
- What?
- The absolute silence!
- Oh yes, you're right, I can even hear the wind! 💨
I felt the altitude a little on the drive, as I had a slight headache. It's extremely important to stay hydrated!
