For our cultural day in Yogyakarta, we organized a driver for 9 hours for a price of 40€, who transferred us to Borobudur & Prambanan. These two temple complexes are UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Borobudur
We started in the morning with the largest Buddhist temple complex in the world, Borobudur. Majestically situated on a hill, this pyramid with a square base with sides measuring 123m was built in the 8th/9th century.
Prambanan
In the afternoon, we visited the Prambanan temple complex. This is the largest Buddhist temple complex in Indonesia and one of the largest complexes in Southeast Asia. Its tall and pointed architectural style resembles the temples in Angkor Wat (Cambodia). The complex was built in the 9th century but was soon abandoned, possibly due to a volcanic eruption from nearby Mount Merapi. Parts of the complex are still not fully restored, and smaller temples in the vicinity are still covered in layers of mud and ash from Mount Merapi's eruptions.
Conclusion: Visiting 2 temple complexes in one day is exhausting in these temperatures, but Prambanan was the highlight of our day! Especially the area around 'Candi Sewu', which we could explore almost without any other tourists...
