Finally the time had come. Already 3 days in the USA and still no real BBQ. So off to the 4505. You order inside the building, eat outside where some beer tent tables are ready.
Steffi had pulled pork from the shoulder and smoked chicken, with coleslaw and fries. I also had brisket and instead of fries, baked beans. This 3-meat combo cost 22.75 dollars. When asked, they said they smoke with hickory.
After a short wait, we got our order brought to the table. The side dishes were convincing. Chicken and brisket were very well smoked, although the latter was cut a little too thick. Both were delicious in terms of taste. The pulled pork was seasoned way too spicy. Unfortunately, we couldn't taste anything from the meat itself. It also seemed that the piece of meat did not develop a crispy crust during smoking. But I was assured that it was smoked for about 16 hours. By the way, I was pleasantly surprised that they offered a white sauce for the chicken, similar to the famous Alabama white sauce, and it tasted good too.
Conclusion: no comparison to BBQ in Memphis or St. Louis. Nevertheless, apart from the pulled pork, I was positively surprised that there is delicious BBQ in SF. The staff was also quite friendly and patiently answered my questions.
