Black Sand Beach
This truly impressive black sand beach is located approximately 58 miles (93 km) from Keauhou, where our apartment is located. However, since there are no highways on the Big Island, the drive there takes quite a long time. The route takes you through various landscapes, past road stops, and then there is nothing but nature for kilometers. It is quite hilly and partly winding. At a viewpoint where we stopped, it felt like we were on the moon. Everything around us was black rock. You really think you are in a different world. On our further way, we saw hundreds or even thousands of macadamia trees. Abandoned cars, which were already overgrown, are a huge problem on an island. People just leave them there because they don't know where to put them.
After what felt like an eternity, we finally reached our destination and were rewarded with a sight that made up for everything! Another world again. A little bit like in primordial times. Black sand, solidified lava, and.... TURTLES 🐢! Real, free-living, large green turtles. Unbelievable! It really touched me! This absolutely untouched nature. And these wonderful creatures, who lay in the warm black sand and we can respectfully observe them. It was an absolutely amazing experience.
We bathed in the bay, but we had to be very careful. There were large sharp rocks under the water and the waves would crash right onto them.
From the beach, we could see a mountain and once again, I felt transported back to primordial times. The sounds, the colors, everything so unreal.
A truly impressive experience.
