Tue. 15.9. Harstad - Senja - Northern Lights!

Wɔatintim: 15.09.2021

All day sun

After a quick departure, we reach the ferry to the island of Rolla ...

but then we have to wait for an hour before the tunnel to Andørja, due to construction work. After crossing a bridge, we are back on the Norwegian mainland.

This can be clearly seen in the landscape: the high mountain ranges extend as far as the eye can see, behind them rise majestic, often snow-covered peaks, and the fjords are deeper and wider.

After a lunch break by a lake ...

we buy some supplies in Finnsnes and then cross another bridge - we are on Senja, Norway's second largest island, about 350 km north of the Arctic Circle. We want to stay in the southern part for two nights first and then travel along the northern coast for a few days.

The campsite with our cabin is located beautifully by a lake and it's not very busy. The campsite manager comes after a call and gives us some information material about Senja.

After unpacking, we take a short walk along the lake.

In the evening, it remains clear, and with the darkness that now sets in noticeably earlier, Northern Lights appear. And what kind of Northern Lights! First a green glow here and there, then long streaks of light, and finally we see a complete aurora arc above us for a long time, from the eastern to the western horizon! It's incredible!

It glows, undulates, weakens, shines brighter again, and together with the starry sky - simply phenomenal. The constellation "Big Dipper" is almost played around by the aurora arc - sometimes above, sometimes below, sometimes wider, ... We are so excited that despite the cold, we can't tear ourselves away from this phenomenon for several hours.

I'm leaving the photos above so that they can be enlarged and viewed better.
