F. Hello there! After our big Southeast Asia trip in 2017/18 and the many positive responses to our previous blog, we want to write a little blog again this time. This time, we want to explore Europe in a van.
Our van is a converted transporter (Fiat Ducato), which was already partially converted by the previous owner. I would have liked to do the conversion myself, but the master's thesis takes up a bit more time. So Jenny and I planned to get a fully converted van that only needs a few small things done, and then we can start our Europe tour as soon as possible. Well, the "few small things" turned out to be a bit more, so we installed a solar system on the roof, revamped the power supply, installed a water system, insulated the rear doors, built a composting toilet, and installed a new gearbox. Thanks to 600 watts of solar power on the roof, 240Ah battery capacity, and 120L of fresh water, we can stand autonomously for quite a long time. Only the shower is not yet available. However, the plans are already in my drawer, we just need better weather for the shower to be worth it, because we can only shower outside. Despite being 6m long, 2.05m wide, and 2.5m high, there is currently no space for a shower in the van.
In early October, the time had finally come. Now only a few small things needed to be done. Clear out the apartment, visit friends and family one last time, and then the van could be loaded. Oh, maximum payload, I almost forgot. After all, we are allowed to weigh up to 3.5 tons, which we managed to do in the end with a full water tank. But I'm also sure that we, as newcomers to van life, packed way too much and could have managed with less by the end of the tour, but you always know that afterwards. That's why trying things out is the smarter choice, so off we go towards the south...
