Pilsen - City of Beer

Wɔatintim: 04.08.2023

Pilsen is mainly known for the beer brewed here. So we started our tour at the brewery.

However, we did not participate in a tour because we had already done one in Budweis, but we only visited the visitor center and the building.

From there, we walked through the park along the mill canal towards the center.

On the way, we passed the Brewery Museum, which we visited.

Brewery Museum

The trilingual exhibition (Czech, English, and German) provides information about the production and history of beer as well as local breweries.

Originally, there were several breweries in Pilsen, but they were gradually taken over by one, the Civic Brewery.

The brewery was founded in 1842 by the citizens of the city to brew a beer of better quality than what most breweries offered at that time.

After our visit to the museum, it was not far to the main square of the city: Republic Square.

Republic Square

In the center of the square stands the Gothic St. Bartholomew Church, which was built from the 13th to the 15th century.

Our path now led us to the Great Synagogue, which was built in the Moorish-Romanesque style and testifies to the Jewish past in the city of Pilsen.

We walked past the theater to the Garden Circle.

The elongated park surrounds the core of the old town.

Here we could also redeem our voucher from the Brewery Museum for a glass of Pilsner Urquell in a restaurant.

We spent the afternoon at the 'Techmania Science Centre', a science museum with an interactive exhibition.

There was also a planetarium where a show was offered in the afternoon, which should have been available in English as well. When we asked about it, we were informed that we should have registered at least half an hour in advance. So we watched the show in Czech and limited ourselves to viewing the images and relaxing in the comfortable seats.
