The Perito Moreno Glacier is a highlight of our tour. Although we have seen many glaciers in Antarctica, we are very impressed with this glacier. The numbers speak for themselves: the width of the glacier (combining the two calving fronts) is about 5 kilometers. The height of the front measures between 55 and 70 meters. The entire glacier has an area of 254 square kilometers (!).
This glacier is constantly moving forward at a fast pace. This leads to constant calving, which is rarely seen elsewhere. It thunders and crackles. The calving occurs at the front and also inside the glacier. The Perito Moreno is completely rugged, as can be seen in the pictures.
Despite the constant loss of ice, the size of the glacier remains unchanged as it continues to grow in the mountains.
We have seen several calving events and I managed to capture one with my camera. This is shown in my contribution 'Glacier Special'.
In the evening, we had a nice New Year's Eve party at the hotel in El Calafate and welcomed the year 2020.
