Anyone who is in South Africa and goes on safaris must definitely visit Kruger National Park. Today was all about Game Drive Safari with our big truck. That meant rolling down all the windows and dressing somewhat windproof. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't on our side.
In the first few hours, we didn't see many animals. A few impalas crossed our path. But then we saw the first exciting animal. A leopard tortoise, which belongs to the small Five.
From then on, our luck started to grow steadily. After the tortoise, we saw a family of elephants in the distance.
After that, a family of giraffes appeared, with the male in mating mood, searching for a female. The male sniffed the females and drank their urine to sense or taste if they were in heat or not. It was really exciting to observe the whole behavior.
After lunch and a few lizards (which were there to see, not to eat), we really started riding the wave of luck.
We searched for him on 2 night game drives and didn't see him. I almost gave up hope of seeing him, and then suddenly, out of nowhere, he stood in front of us on the road. A leopard. Unbelievable.
But as quickly as he came, he disappeared into the bush. But we had seen him. A great feeling.
After that, we also had a close encounter with the elephants.
And as if we hadn't already had enough luck, we found 3 spots where we could observe rhinos.
Another highlight were the two fighting impala bucks. The loser had to flee with a broken horn and wounds on his face.
Zebras, kudus, wildebeest, buffalos, and birds also crossed our path.
A truly successful game drive. Our campsite for tonight is inside the park, so we'll have another full day tomorrow to observe animals.
