As non-racing cyclists, we first had to be given a helping hand to understand what this truly unique mountain in the middle of Provence is all about. In the past, there were legendary Tor-de-France mountain stages that made cycling history. The view from up there is also said to be truly incredible; if the visibility is good, you can see from the summit from the Alps all the way to Marseille.
We wanted to know for sure and drove – a little more comfortably – up the pass road to the top at 1910 m above sea level. What we saw was truly breathtaking. However, fog rolled in and a little later it started to rain. We hid in the bistro to dry off and passed the time with coffee and delicious raspberry cake and decided to try the venture again at a later date when the weather was better.
On the way back we stop in Malaucène – the sun is already shining again – and are happy to come across a charming little town at the foot of the Ventoux.
