Meddawatta Beach - a place to relax and unwind

Wɔatintim: 11.04.2019

After spending a few days in Weligama, here is my assessment:

Although many said Weligama was crowded, touristy, and not necessarily the first choice, I must say that I really enjoyed my time there.

At the end of the season, there were no crowded lineups, sometimes there were only 6-10 people in the water. So, I caught one or two waves.

Now I leave Weligama behind and move to the beautiful beach around Meddawatta. Located a bit away from Matara, SK Town has a wonderful beach break right in front.

Instead of traveling alone, I asked Louise if she wanted to join me.

Louise :-*

Louise is from England but has been living in Sydney for years and works as a teacher. Until she decided to leave her job and explore the world with her surfboard. She started surfing a few years ago after moving to Sydney and discovering her passion for it. As an enthusiastic snowboarder, it makes sense. Now I can explore the Matara area with her before moving to Leo and Jan's camp in the next few days.

Arriving sweaty and tired in Meddawatta, we were greeted by Chandana - also known as Silva - the owner of his guesthouse. Located right on the beach, it's the perfect place to jump into the water when the waves and wind are right.

After a short sunset surf, Chandana and Ananusha prepared an incredible Sri Lankan meal for us. Curry with Roti and Coconut Sambal. What a delight! We sat together for a long time, sharing great stories about Sri Lanka and philosophizing about surfing, traveling, and various cultures. Chandana himself spends half the year in Ireland working and has 4 (or 5?!) children. One of his sons is a really good surfer.

We got to know him the next morning while surfing.

Louise and I met Steph (a yoga teacher and masseuse at the Infinity surfcamp) for an early morning surf at 6 o'clock.

We were all incredibly tired, so the surf was a bit challenging. Nevertheless, we had some fun banter with Chandana's son, Steph, and another German surfer while waiting for the next wave.

And then? We were hungry! And what did Chandana and Ananusha serve us? An incredible fruit platter with scrambled eggs and toast.

What else can I say? Could life be more beautiful than waking up on the beach, surfing, indulging in fresh tropical fruits, and simply enjoying the calmness of a place that is far away from any hustle and bustle? Definitely not! Returning to this place - which showed me last year that there is so much more than just work - feels right.

Thanks to Sri Lanka and the people who welcome you with open arms.
