After a few days of holiday at home, the time has come for me to start my tour towards the northeast. After the first damage to the bus - a marten bite - has been repaired, I finally leave in the midday heat. The journey on the A5, A8 and A81 is quite exhausting, about half an hour before Würzburg I switch to country roads. Past wheat fields and small villages. My accommodation should be a parking lot right next to Marienberg Fortress. At the last minute, I decide to park at the Mainufer parking lot, because I really want to go for a swim after the hot long drive. Unfortunately, all parking spaces are occupied and I take the large P&R parking lot nearby.
With Ernie securely locked, I cycle along the Mainufer until I find a suitable spot to swim. How great that I brought my bike. I'm totally happy, as I didn't expect to find a bathing spot today :) After that, I quickly return to my apartment before I walk up to the fortress for sunset.
Afterwards, I cycle to the old town via the old Main bridge, where people gather for 'bridge shopping' in Würzburg. I'm running a bit late for dinner, so I decide to have a quick falafel box and then treat myself to a scoop of ice cream, which costs only 1 euro here.
It's so great to be able to just hop on a bike and ride off in a foreign place - it feels just like home. Which is actually true, since I even have an apartment with me :)
Although it's only the first day, everything has been going pretty perfectly so far. I even have a couchsurfing opportunity for tomorrow, which is on the way to Leipzig.
