03/02/220 from Guantanamo to Baracoa

Today, luck is on our side. We start in Guantanamo towards the beaches on a very well-built coastal road, sometimes taking a dip here and cooling our feet in the strong surf there. Then the trail starts through the mountains, about 600 meters in altitude, with steep hairpin turns and small farmers lurking on the road, wanting to sell bananas and trinkets to men and women.

But what we didn't expect is a great road, almost without potholes. And so we arrive in Baracoa in high spirits and there is gasoline, even especial, without waiting in line, they want to give us 20 liters and we only need 14 liters for a full tank. Happy. The hotel complex far above the rooftops of the city is remarkable, a hotel with a pool and 28 large airy rooms has been set up in an old castle. We are satisfied, settle in and stroll through the city. This place suffered heavy damage from a hurricane in 2014, which we can see clearly from our hotel room, but the people are friendly. They try to cover up the lack with paint. There are many private accommodations, these houses are also painted in fresh colors and seem to be in good condition. That's private initiative for you. The coastal town has a long Malecon, a promenade right by the sea. The waves are high here, with rough rocks, unfortunately littered, preventing us from going to the water, the beach is a few hundred meters further. In the evening, we visited a restaurant recommended by the guide, "Reiseknowhow Cuba 2017". It was worth it, grilled squid and shrimp in coconut sauce. Highly recommended.
