Day 33: Cape Jervis - Kangaroo Island (Penneshaw, American River, Stokes Bay)

Wɔatintim: 28.11.2016

For safety reasons, we set our alarm clock. Our ferry to Kangaroo Island doesn't leave until 10 o'clock, but yesterday everyone stayed up late and we don't want to oversleep. We have a little breakfast, refill our water, and head to the port. It's only about 3 km straight from the campsite (where we have a great view). It looks like you're driving straight into the sea. We arrive at the dock just before 9 o'clock and see the 9 o'clock ferry loading and leaving. We get our tickets and watch the activity in the parking lot. Our ferry arrives at 9:45 o'clock. The kids and I board the ferry and Michi and the camper get to drive/park. We go to the top deck and enjoy the 45-minute open-air ride. It's a bit chilly, but since the sun is shining, it's bearable.

Once we've landed on Kangaroo Island, we first visit the Visitor Center. There, we get a detailed map, some brochures, and information about activities and accommodation options.

We want to spend the first night in the north of the island, so we head northwest. Our first stop is American River. We take a little walk along the beach promenade. There's a hide for bird watching. There are a few pelicans there. A little further along the way, we discover a playground. Of course, we have to make a stop there. There's a big sandbox with a digger, and Samuel can hardly be lured away.

Originally, we also wanted to go to the capital Kingscote and Emu Bay, but due to the advanced time, we decide to go straight to Stokes Bay and stay overnight there.

Stokes Bay is very beautifully located. Very relaxing. The campsite is very basic. There's a small bar, toilets, and, something Sami discovers immediately - a sandbox.

We make our way to the beach. At first glance, everything looks quite rocky. But if you wind your way through a few rocks - almost a little gorge - you'll come to a beautiful sandy beach. We put our feet in the water and enjoy the evening sun at the beach. For dinner, we have kangaroo fillet - very tasty.
