Day 2+3: from Marlborough to Freeport/Maine

Wɔatintim: 17.09.2018

Oh my goodness...yesterday I was so tired and sleep-deprived that I couldn't write anymore.

We spent the night from Friday to Saturday in Marlborough. I didn't close my eyes and the time change really took its toll on me.

Fortunately, my husband was fit, so he could drive towards Maine on Saturday morning. I was only good for decoration in the car. More wasn't necessary either, because this time our GPS knew the way and led us straight to Freeport.

To see a bit of the area, we took smaller roads parallel to the coast towards the north.

Since we couldn't move into our vacation home until 3:00 PM and we were already in Freeport at 1:00 PM, we took a round through the local outlet center and also bought some groceries for the coming days.

We're a bit surprised by the prices here...

A loaf of bread for $6 or 400g of tomatoes for $7 seem quite generous to us. Especially considering the quality of the bread😳.

But well. We didn't want to go out anymore because I was so tired by now that I started to freeze at 25 degrees Celsius because my circulation was so low.

So we just took some bread toppings with us and drove to our accommodation.

There we unpacked everything, had something to eat, and I fell into bed.

What 10 hours of sleep can do...

I woke up like new this morning. We had a relaxed breakfast and then set off for Portland.

A really beautiful little town.

For lunch, we went to Yarmouth to eat our first lobster roll. Basically the reason why we wanted to make a detour to Maine.

I mean, yes, it's delicious...but it didn't blow me away.

From there, we made a detour to Cousins Island and went to the beach there.

The rest of the day, we enjoyed our wooden house and the sun, and spent the hours with a book on the terrace.

In the evening, we had steak from the grill. That was more to my taste😋.

We will stay in Maine until Thursday and then make our way to Pennsylvania to visit our son.

What has been bothering me after just two days is seeing men with amputated legs that I have seen multiple times since yesterday, and they all looked like they lived on the fringes of society. Today in Portland, there was a small green area between two streets where several men in wheelchairs were sitting, all without shins and some with cardboard signs in their hands asking for donations.

I assume that we saw war veterans. Sad to see what a war does to individuals.
