The day starts cloudy and stays that way. I start the 20 km hike to Loma del Pliegue Tumbado, a rocky hilltop that offers an excellent 360-degree panorama of the surrounding peaks.

There are French, British, German, and Swiss people everywhere. Unfortunately, I hardly need my Spanish. Along the way, signs warn of “vacas salvajes” (wild cows). My provisions are tasty pumpkin and corn empanadas. Back at the hostel, I exchange travel tips with the Germans and French until a group of American girls storm the kitchen like the Sex and the City Girls. Their strong need to communicate combined with their overly expressive American way quickly gets on my nerves, and I go to bed.
